What Does The Word ‘Seduce’ Mean In Greek?

In today’s language, the word seduce has a sexual assumption attached to it. However, in the original biblical languages, it doesn’t mean what we use it for today. That’s why I wanted to look up what the word seduce means in Greek.

What Does The Word ‘Seduce’ Mean In Greek?

apoplanao- to lead astray; to wander; to cause to wander away from the truth.

This word is used metaphorically of leading into error.

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

– 1 Timothy 6:10

planao- to deceive; to go astray, wander.

“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?”

– Matthew 18:12

“And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”

– John 7:12

In Revelation 12:9, it’s a description of the devil:

“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

Also, it’s can be used to speak about deceiving oneself.

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,”

– 1 Corinthians 6:9

Conclusion

As you can see, the word seduce was used in the sense of someone begin led away from the truth. The truth is Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God. Anything that tries to steal someone away from these things comes from a seducing spirit.
