Did you know there are benefits to obeying God? If you love God, you’ll obey His commandments (John 14:15). Therefore, I am not here to persuade you to obey God’s commandments. That’s something that comes naturally as you become born again and spend more time with the Holy Spirit. However, I do want to teach you some benefits of obeying God according to scripture. These should not be ignored and if you’re loyal to God, these things should be expected.
All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.
You’ll Find Happiness
“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But happy is he who keeps the law.”
– Proverbs 29:18
One of the reasons I believe people who follow the law are happier is because they spend less time feeling convicted. There’s a joy that comes with obedience. Also, with all the following benefits of obeying God, how could you not be happy?
You’ll Be Blessed
“Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today…”
– Deuteronomy 11:26-27
God blesses those who are faithful to Him. Sure, He blesses everyone now and again, but He promises you a blessing if you obey His commandments.
You’ll Have Peace
“Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace.”
– Proverbs 37:37
Jesus said He was leaving us with peace (John 14:27). Therefore, if you’re born again in the Spirit of God then you have peace. It’s up to you to decide whether or not you will walk in it. I believe another reason why those who disobey God don’t have peace is that they’re living in sin. There is no peace in sin. That only comes from God.
If you’re constantly sinning against God, how could you be at peace? If you’re a Christian, you would constantly feel convicted and not happy with yourself. That’s not a recipe for success.
God Will Hear Your Prayers
“If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear.
But certainly God has heard me;
He has attended to the voice of my prayer.”
– Psalm 66:18-19
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anything hindering my prayers! I want God to hear them directly and answer them when I need Him to.
You’ll Gain Wisdom
“He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk uprightly.”
– Proverbs 2:7
Living correctly teaches you through experience. Sometimes you have to live the principles of the Bible to understand why they work. As you begin to let go of sin and grab onto the righteousness of Christ, you’ll begin to have revelations as to why God commands the actions He does.
You’ll Have A Long Life
“My son, do not forget my law,
But let your heart keep my commands;
For length of days and long life
And peace they will add to you.”
– Proverbs 3:1-2
I know that my future home is in Heaven and that I don’t belong to this world. However, I would still like to live a long life to tell others about the gospel of Jesus Christ and further God’s agenda on earth. Don’t sabotage your future with deadly mistakes in the present.
You’ll Be Perfected
“But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”
– 1 John 2:5
The only thing I want is to grow in God’s goodness and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. I’m relieved that God will allow that to happen when I obey His commandments.
You’ll Be Safe
“So you shall observe My statutes and keep My judgments, and perform them; and you will dwell in the land in safety.”
– Leviticus 25:18
I’ve learned in the past year that people who claim to be Christians don’t actually trust God as much as they say they do. If they did, they wouldn’t be so scared to leave their home or gather with their loved ones. Does God not know everything? Has God not created the heavens and the earth? Does the Bible not tell you how the world will end? Nevertheless, people are afraid.
The Bible tells us over and over again to not be afraid. If you’re following the commandments of God, there’s no reason to be afraid of anything.
“In God I have put my trust;
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?”
– Psalm 56:11
You’ll Be Known As A Friend Of God
“You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.”
– Proverbs 15:14
If you’re born again and you love God, why wouldn’t you want to be known as a friend of God? Sure, the world may hate you and want to eliminate you. However, the hope and security you have in Christ are far more valuable than anything else in this universe.
You Can Enjoy God’s Presence More
“Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
– John 14:23
You cannot have a fully operatable and functional relationship with God if you do not regularly spend time with Him. Therefore, invite God into your home and worship Him through your obedience to Him.
There are many great benefits of obeying God. These include:

- Being blessed
- Having peace
- God will hear your prayers
- You’ll gain wisdom
