How To Honor God With Your Body

how to honor God with your body

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

– 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

A few years ago, I received a life-changing lesson from the scripture above: My body belongs to God- not me. It’s not my body so I don’t have the right to treat it however I desire. My body belongs to the Lord and that means I should do what He asks of me.

Our body is one of the greatest gifts God has given us. We should show our appreciation by taking care of it. In fact, we can worship and glorify God by obeying Him with our body and presenting ourselves a living sacrifice.

How can we honor God with our bodies? Here are six different ways we can do just that.

All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

– Matthew 11:18-20

There’s no doubt about it: life is stressful! It can be difficult to even step back and take a moment to reflect. However, it’s so necessary to do so. We can not continue to perform well if we don’t calm down and relax.

That’s why I suggest you unwind for a while and take a break. Do what makes you feel good and spend quality time with God.

Pray. Worship. Praise. Read the Word. Get into some deep time with God, ask Him to help you with your life, and allow Him to run the show.

Get Enough Sleep & Rest

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.

– Psalm 23:2

Sleep is a gift from God and something that is required of us to do. When we work hard and get stressed, we need to properly recover in order to get stronger. Rest and sleep are extremely important.

When you get enough sleep, you feel better and can perform better. Don’t neglect the amount of time you get of sleep. Chronic fatigue can be caused by an unclean spirit.

If you have trouble sleeping, try praying, cutting off the TV earlier, and creating a bedtime routine. If you’ve tried all you can and you’re still not tired, that may mean you need to exert more energy in the daytime. Add a little bit of exercise to your day.

Drink More Water

The average human body is made up of 60% of water. That means if you don’t have enough water in your body then it could affect how you feel. I always get surprised when people admit to me that they know they don’t drink enough water.

There are a few ways you could try to get more water in your system, such as:

  • Keep water around you.
  • Don’t buy other options at the store.
  • Buy yourself a nice looking jug.
  • Drink warm water instead of cold water. (You may be able to drink more at a time because it won’t be too cold.)
  • Set a goal and keep track of how much you’re drinking.
  • Check the color of your urine to see if you’re hydrated enough. (Check out this neat urine color chart.)

Eat More Natural Foods

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

– 1 Corinthians 10:31

One thing I’ve decided to do was to honor God with what I decide to eat and drink.

God has created amazing foods for His people. Unfortunately, many people enjoy eating foods that were created by humans instead. For example, frozen TV dinners and candy were created by humans. Frozen foods are pumped full of preservatives and artificial flavoring to make it taste and appear as the food on the cover.

Natural foods include:

  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • whole grains
  • beans and legumes
  • milks
  • tea
  • coffee

When you look at the ingredient list, strive for foods that contain five or less recognizable foods on the list. If you cannot recognize it, then you probably shouldn’t be eating it.

Switch from refined, white grains to whole grains. This simple switch can help you shed pounds and gain more nutrients. It also reduces your chance of inflammation.

Another great piece of advice that I wish someone had told me sooner is to quit fast food (or at least reduce the amount you eat). It’s so bad for the human body.

All in all, consider cooking more. Cook with quality foods and strive to get more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Ideally, you should be getting five. If you implement these steps, you will feel the difference in no time.

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

– George Bernard Shaw

Think about the human body. God put so many muscles, tendons, and joints in it. He did this because we are designed us to move. Work is good for us. We’re made in the image of God and the first time God appears in the Bible, He’s working. He works for six days straight and rests on the seventh day.

I believe this: If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. I’ve seen many elderly people who are in great shape. Every time I ask them their secrets they say to eat right and stay active.

For example, there’s a veteran that I admire and I had no idea that he was set to retire this year. The man is pushing seventy and he works harder than those around him. When I asked him what he would say to someone my age about keeping healthy, he shrugged and said, “Just keep moving and don’t eat junk.”

He said it so plainly as if he was speaking common sense. Well, he was, but many people don’t live by those simple rules. Many people are held captive on the couch by their television and cell phone. Don’t let that be you!

Make exercise fun by playing! Go swimming, ride a bicycle, play a sport, or go for a walk with your family. If you have children or grandchildren, go outside and play with them. Whatever you do- don’t do nothing!

If Needed, Add Supplements

Not everyone needs to supplement, but my family and I choose to take a daily multivitamin. I definitely suggest you speak with your physician before adding anything to your diet. While supplements can help, they can also hurt if done ignorantly. Always ask a professional first!

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

– Romans 12:1

The Lord created our body and has let us borrow them for our earthly journey. Therefore, be sure to honor and glorify God with your body in the way you decide to live. Some suggestions include:

  • De-stress
  • Getting enough sleep and rest
  • Drinking more water
  • Eating more natural foods
  • Exercising
  • Add supplements, if needed
