How To Walk In Excellence

walk in excellence

Being excellent is a wonderful character trait. God is excellent and He calls us to walk in His way. The Bible speaks about many ways on how to walk in excellence. Since it’s such an important topic, I want to take some time to discuss it with you and how you can become a more excellent Christian.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

– 2 Timothy 2:15

All scriptures come from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.

Make Yourself Better

“We can have more than we’ve got because we can become more than we are.”

– Jim Rohn

Our lives on earth should not be stagnant. Instead, we should be learning and growing every day. We could be developing new skills or beneficial habits. Be very careful to not waste your time here on earth. Take advantage of all the time God is giving to you.

What are you current goals? If you do not have any, spend some time to create some. Then, you can begin to grow in that direction.

Discipline gets us where we desire to go in life. It’s also what takes us to the next level that God desires for us.

“But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

– 1 Corinthians 9:27

Do Your Best In Everything

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

– Romans 12:1

I decided long ago that I was going to worship God in my everyday life by presenting myself a living sacrifice unto God. That means in all that I do I will perform my absolute best. God deserves it and it’s the least I could do for Him.

However, that doesn’t mean that I’m perfect. Obviously, I still make mistakes but I will still do the best I can and trust in God to make up for the areas I lack.

When you do your very best, you will make yourself more confident. You will know that no one can rightly accuse you of wrongdoing because you’ve been faithful and have not compromised yourself.

Do all that you do to glorify and bring honor to God.

Meditate On Scripture And Read The Word

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

– Romans 12:2

The only way we can continue to walk righteously is to be ever filled with the Holy Spirit. That’s why it’s incredibly important to spend time with God every day- whether that means to read the Word, pray, worship, or meditate on scripture.

Practice Communication Skills

Communication skills are extremely important. Communication is how we connect with our fellow humans. Therefore, if we get better at communicating then we can create better relationships and friendships with others.

One of my favorite books on communicating with others is by Dale Carnegie called, “How To Win Friends And Influence People.” You may be able to find it for cheap on I order all my books from Thriftbooks. They may be used, but they’re cheaper and I like the feeling of reading something that I know someone else has previously enjoyed.

Besides that book, there are many others you can find with a little research. Don’t neglect your communication skills because you will be utterly surprised at how that little improvement can change your life and transform your relationships.

Be Polite, Respectful, Appreciative, And Encouraging

The golden rule says to treat others the way you would want to be treated. I love this saying and use it as a core foundation in my own life. I believe it’s one of the reasons why my marriage is so successful. We always consider our spouse first and ask the question, “How would I feel if they did this”.

However, I do this with all my interactions. I listen more than I speak and I give the other person preference over myself.

Another great habit to develop is to simply smile. Say good morning and greet others by name. Say thank you and show your appreciation to others.

When someone does something correctly, praise them for it. Share goodness and light with others in the world.

Excellence is not a habit that is grown overnight. However, with practice, you can become an expert at it and begin to change the world around you in a positive manner. Some ways you can practice walking in excellence are:

  • Make yourself better
  • Do your best in everything
  • Meditate on scripture and read the Word
  • Practice communication skills
  • Treat others the way you would want to be treated
