Believe it or not, the Bible does mention astrology. Sometimes it uses the term ‘star-gazer’ or ‘monthly prognosticator.’ Nevertheless, it’s in there and God definitely has something to say about astrology. If you enjoy reading horoscopes or love to identify with your sign, you may not like what He says about it. However, it’s still an important topic that needs to be addressed. In this post, we’re going to answer the question, “Is astrology demonic?”
When I discovered what God’s thoughts were on astrology and how He spoke about it, I quickly made a decision that I would no longer associate with any of that stuff. I never really cared for it so it wasn’t too hard. Yet, I know some people who are really into the monthly signs and what horoscopes say.
Let’s take a look at the first scripture I want to mention about astrology. This scripture is very straightforward and there’s no mistaking what God meant here.
All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.
Deuteronomy 18:9-14
“When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.“
In the above scripture, God makes a list of practices that He wants His people to avoid and calls them abominations. He stated that because of these abominations, He’s going to allow them to take over the land. In order to get a deeper understanding of these practices, let’s define these words with the 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary.
Witchcraft- The practice of witches; sorcery; enchantments; intercourse with the devil.
Soothsayer- Foreteller; prognosticator.
Omens- A sign or indication of some future event; a prognostic.
Diviner- One who professes divination; one who pretends to predict events, or to reveal occult things, by the aid of superior beings, or of supernatural means.
Sorcerer- A conjurer; an enchanter; a magician.
Medium- Communication with the dead (not from 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary).
Spiritist- One who believes that spirits are nearby, living among people, and can be interacted with (not from 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary).
As you can see, there’s one pattern that exists among these abominations: the attempt to know or control the future through means other than God and His Spirit. For example, a prognosticator is a person who uses signs of the present (such as the stars) to determine and foretell the future.
If people who create horoscopes are considered soothsayers, does that mean those who use horoscopes are sinning when doing so? I would say so. If someone is drunk and about to get behind the wheel of a car, would it be wrong to get in the passenger seat and allow them to drive? If you’re aiding, contributing, and participating in the sin of someone else’s, then you’re sinning too.
“Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.”
– 2 Kings 21:6
The above scripture is talking about King Manasseh when he reigned over Jerusalem. God was angry because he did many evil things that God instructed His people to not do. If God considers His actions evil, and evil does not come from God, then doesn’t that mean it comes from the enemy?

The Quest For Knowledge
There’s no denying that people are anxious about the future and want to know what lies ahead. This is what ends up leading people down the wrong path. People should trust in God and go to Him when they need guidance or wisdom. However, if they aren’t getting what they want from God (or don’t want to believe in His existence) then they turn to other means.
Demon and unclean spirits can tell you about the future. This is how fortune-tellers and diviners get their insight. Yet, God considers this an abomination because they are deliberately turning from God and seeking other (demonic) spirits to get what they want. Look at what happened to King Saul when He decided to go down this route.
“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.“
– 1 Chronicles 10:13-14
God Knows Everything And Created The Stars
“He counts the number of the stars;
He calls them all by name.“
– Psalm 147:4
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.“
– Psalm 19:1
God created the stars and knows them all by name. He placed them where they are and even uses the objects in heaven to show His people signs of the end times and/or significant events:
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.“
– Joel 2:30-31
However, demonic spirits can try to use God’s stars to tell their own story. They have their own plan for mankind and can twist the star’s meaning to their advantage and to lead people astray from God.
“For the idols speak delusion;
The diviners envision lies,
And tell false dreams;
They comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wend their way like sheep;
They are in trouble because there is no shepherd.“
– Zechariah 10:2
It’s important to remember that true knowledge and wisdom comes from God and God alone. He will freely give insight to anyone who asks Him for it (James 1:5). Of course, there are people who hate God and will do anything to stay away from Him or disprove His love. That’s why they have to turn to other sources to get what they seek. But don’t be fooled.
“Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.“
– Proverbs 27:1
The Spirit Of Divination
“Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.“
– Acts 16:16-19
In this story, Paul encountered a demonic spirit of divination. The girl who was possessed made her masters a lot of money by being a fortune teller for them and the demon within her recognized the men who had the spirit of God.
Paul commanded the unclean spirit to leave and when it did, it took its powers of divination with it. The girl was no longer able to tell fortunes for her masters and that made them very angry.
Scriptures About Astrology
“Thus says the Lord:
“Do not learn the way of the Gentiles;
Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven,
For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.“
– Jeremiah 10:2
“You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying.”
– Leviticus 19:26
“I will cut off sorceries from your hand,
And you shall have no soothsayers.“
– Micah 5:12
“If there is found among you, within any of your gates which the Lord your God gives you, a man or a woman who has been wicked in the sight of the Lord your God, in transgressing His covenant, who has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, either the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, and it is told you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination has been committed in Israel, then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has committed that wicked thing, and shall stone to death that man or woman with stones.“
– Deuteronomy 17:2-5
“So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, made for themselves a molded image and two calves, made a wooden image and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone.“
– 2 Kings 17:16-18
“Abstain from every form of evil.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:22
Conclusion
I hope you can see by now that astrology is demonic. It comes from a spirit that is not the spirit of God. Many people make a lot of money with horoscopes because others want to know what the future holds. They want to know if their marriage will last or if their kids will be safe.
Sure, people with divining spirits can tell you what you want, but they have to go through ungodly, sinful ways to do it. Therefore, you don’t want to get entangled up with that.
Also, these demonic spirits can tell someone the future. Just because someone can perform signs and wonders does not mean that they have the spirit of God. You must test every spirit to see where it originates from and what its intentions are.
Plus, keep in mind that fortune-telling is a great way for the enemy to speak his will onto people. For example, if the diviner tells you that your marriage won’t last and you agree and believe it, now you’ve taken Satan’s plans for your life. You’ve agreed with him and made a pact.
If you’ve done any of the things the Lord has called an abomination, repent and disband their grip on your life. Speak God’s truth and will over your life to secure His plans for you.
