As believers in Christ, we are at war with the kingdom of darkness. There are enemies we can’t see that have real and lasting effects in the physical realm. If we want to be effective in the Kingdom of God, it’s important that we know and understand the ways in which these enemies work. Therefore, I’m going to share with you the two main objectives of demons.
#1. To Keep You From Knowing Christ As Savior
God created people to dwell with Him and know Him intimately. The enemy’s main goal is to keep people from having a real relationship with God. He will do the best he can to ensure people will be kept from hearing the truth found in God’s Word. I believe that’s why in many countries, the Bible is outright banned. In many communists countries today, the people are only allowed to worship the dictator who rules over that country. Just recently, believers in China had their books seized and were sentenced to prison.
The enemy operates in lies. The Bible calls him the Father of lies. (John 8:44) Therefore, the only way to effectively beat the enemy is by the truth in God’s Word. Indeed, atheist communist regimes have killed over one hundred million people in the last century. They’ve all had propaganda machines that assisted them to pull off their heinous crimes. For example, how many nazis thought Jews were disgusting and needed to be purged from the earth? I’m assuming a good majority of them.
But how? Well, the enemy ensnares people in lies from a young age. Usually, the enemy targets the youth in order to brainwash them before they have a chance to meet God and learn right from wrong. If you can corrupt the youth, you can eventually corrupt the whole society.
Another effective way the enemy keeps people from knowing Christ as savior is to infiltrate religion. There are many other religions apart from Christianity whose focus is not on Christ or even the God of Israel.
Also, there are many lukewarm churches that “have a form of godliness but deny its power.” (2 Timothy 3:5) In other words, they never preach the true message of Christ. Yes, it’s possible that a church can serve the world more than it does Christ.
If anything, Christian churches are a huge target of Satan. If he can infiltrate and work evil, it will cause great harm.
For example, I know of a pastor who slept with a member’s wife. That was the working of the enemy and I can tell you it did a lot of harm to the work of God.
Another example is I’ve heard many people tell stories of bad church experiences when explaining why they don’t go to church. Stories like “The pastor didn’t do half the things he preached” or “the people seemed to just want to go somewhere dressed up.” Unfortunately, if Satan infiltrates a Christian church many people can become convinced that God and the Bible are not real.
I believe the enemy works tirelessly to ensure people remain distracted. If he can keep someone caught up in their selfish ways, they’ll never even think about God. There are so many avenues the enemy uses to keep people from knowing Jesus as Christ, I don’t think it’s possible to name them all here.
But surely, his main goal is to make sure people never learn about Christ or come to know Him as their savior who cleanses them from their sin.
#2. To Keep You From Serving God Effectively
Obviously, demons are not all-powerful and cannot keep everyone from coming to know Christ as their savior. Therefore, their plan b is to keep the believer from effectively serving God.
Once we become born again, we become the ambassadors of God’s Kingdom. (2 Corinthians 5:20) The Bible is very clear about how to live this new life in Christ. We are to put off the old man and put on the new man. (Ephesians Chapter 4) God expects us to fight with and overcome sin through the power of His Holy Spirit.
Demons work endlessly to keep believers trapped in sin and doing activities that are harmful to their bodies or to the purpose of God’s Kingdom.
Born again believers in Christ cannot be demon-possessed. They are possessed and owned by God alone. However, they can have areas in their life where they are under demonic attack. There can be instances that believers are totally unaware they’re under the influence of a demon.
For example, the church would acknowledge that a person shouldn’t be addicted to alcohol. If a believer was attending church and addicted to alcohol, the church would try to get that person assistance in order to overcome their addiction. Yet, how many Christians are addicted to eating food? How many are addicted to watching TV, social media likes and clicks, or video games? What about masturbation? Hidden sins are just as important as blatant sins.
In other words, demons work in all sorts of ways we don’t always acknowledge as demonic. Anything that is a compulsive addiction is a demon. Through the Holy Spirit, you should be able to obtain the fruit of self-control (Galatians 5:22) and use it to control your flesh through the power of Jesus Christ.
As believers in Christ, we are not without power and help. We have an assignment to do from God that can help fight against these desires of Satan.
For the first objective, we are to preach and speak the gospel of Jesus Christ as much as possible to whoever will listen. The Bible calls us the light of the world (Matthew 5:14) and speaks of God as the ‘Father of lights’. (James 1:17) It also speaks about the wicked who walk in darkness and do not know what causes them to stumble. In addition to that, it called the enemy a ruler of darkness. (Ephesians 6:12)
Having this picture, we should be able to see that we can bring light to shine in the darkness and expose the wicked ways of the enemy. If we take the light of Christ to where there’s currently darkness and preach the Word of God, there’s a chance souls will be saved and become torches themselves.
The solution to the second objective is to fully seek God and yield your flesh to the Holy Spirit. The only way to truly be successful the way God intends us to is to ‘seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness’. (Matthew 6:33) If you know there’s an area in your life that is under attack by an enemy, seek deliverance. Slay the flesh and starve it from sin, feeding it with the Word of God and prayer.
Also, don’t let sin stop you from seeking God. I truly believe the only cure for sin is the Word of God, the constant presence of the Holy Spirit, and the power of the blood of Jesus. There’s no other way to really be cleansed from sin.
There are two main objectives of demons:
- To keep people from knowing Christ as savior
- To keep believers from effectively serving God
The way to fight these things would be to study God’s Word, pray in the Holy Spirit, be filled with the power of the blood of Jesus, and preach the gospel as much and as often as possible. By doing these things, we’ll be doing great harm to the kingdom of darkness and save souls for God’s kingdom.
