There was a time when people didn’t feel comfortable with the spiritual realm and the unknown. They stayed away from that kind of stuff and clung to God. However, as time went on people as a whole got more comfortable with the spiritual realm. For example, Halloween is something Christians and unbelievers celebrate alike.

Just scroll through the movies and shows on Netflix. Chances are you’ll find many scary movies that would take hours to watch. For some reason, people seem to love the thrill of being frightened. If you’ve ever been to Six Flags during Fright Fest then you know exactly what I mean.

I totally get it because I used to like scary movies, too. It was fun to pick at the imagination of the unknown. People find it entertaining because they don’t think any of the stuff they’re seeing could actually be true. And if it is, it’s not something they couldn’t handle themselves with some sage and a cleansing.

But that all changed for me. I no longer watch scary movies or even trailers for that matter. My family doesn’t celebrate Halloween. In fact, I’m very watchful at all times to make sure no unclean spirits are making a move at my family.

What changed my perspective?

My perspective was completely changed forever when I came face to face with a demon. A real, horrifying evil spirit. I was completely unprepared because I never thought I’d ever see anything like that. My attempts to call out for Jesus were futile as the evil spirit suffocated my cries into silence. The demon laughed and mocked me as I struggled to breathe.

You can read the full story about that encounter here.

After that, I knew that the darkness that lived in the spiritual realm was not one to be messed with by someone who did not have a strong relationship with God. But what about those who do not know God or even mock His existence? Are those people vulnerable to attacks and even demonic possession?

All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.

About Demonic Possession

daimonizomai – to be under the influence of a demon.

Demons can possess people that aren’t filled with the Holy Spirit. Since there’s a spiritual void within them, a demonic spirit can easily fill that void and obtain heavy influence over that person.

They can inject thoughts, confusion, and imaginations into their mind. A demon can appear as multiple personalities (which explains why some people can hear many voices in their head that they cannot escape from). An unclean spirit can also control a person’s physical movements.

Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

– Luke 8:26-29

In the above scripture, the man was demon-possessed. He had immense physical strength being able to break chains off of his body. Also, the demons spoke right though his lips and confessed Jesus was the Son of God.

A demon-possessed person will avoid prayer and the Bible. They’ll also have negative reactions whenever the name of Jesus is mentioned.

Can A Christian Be Demon-Possessed?

The short answer to this question is no. A Christian cannot be owned and totally controlled by a demon. However, they can be under the influence of an unclean spirit. Since the born again Christian has the Holy Spirit living within them, they cannot have another spirit in that space. But they most certainly can have a spirit live side by side with them and go undetected.

Weak and uneducated Christians are especially at risk. Satan wants believers to think that they are immune to being influenced by unclean spirits. Those who are obedient to God and live in His Will have a very low chance of giving power over to the enemy.

Yet, those who are disobedient and live with habitual, unconfessed sin are absolutely at risk. Ephesians 4:27 speaks about Christians having the ability to “give place to the devil.” The enemy can use the area that’s controlled by sin to enslave a Christian into ineffectiveness.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

– 2 Corinthians 10:4-6

The strongholds that the Bible talks about in the above scripture is used to describe areas in the mind where Satan has complete control over. If these thoughts get out of hand, he can expand the territory he owns. Therefore, the enemy can take root in your mind and influence your thoughts which will then influence your behavior. Keeping your mind in check and under control is one of the most important things to do and a sure way to keep your life safe.

The ultimate goal is to keep the believer distracted by their thoughts. A Christian who is depressed, oppressed, and harassed by demons will have a hard time obeying and carrying out the Will of God.

As a believer in Christ, you do not have to fear the enemy. However, you do need to be informed about the enemy’s tactics so you can effectively fight back.

I would certainly suggest avoiding demonic activities and entertainment styles that may lead to the infiltration of the mind. Those who are demon-possessed can be set free by someone who is an expert in deliverance.
