The Bible tells us how to operate in almost every area of our lives. Certainly, it covers the most important areas. This post will go over five responsibilities of a husband covered in the Bible. Of course, being in a marriage is a big job and there are more than five responsibilities someone would have. However, here are some things to get you started on this topic of knowledge.
To Be A Provider
“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
– 1 Timothy 5:8
All throughout history, it’s been understood that the husband’s job is to provide for the household. In more primitive societies, this makes sense. A man is naturally stronger. Therefore, it’d be easier for him to do heavy work such as gathering wood for fire or animals for meat. In some nations, men still have to hunt.
Also, when a husband and wife start a family the woman can’t do much after. It takes a little while for a woman’s body to return back to normal. For a while, she’s weak. How would she work and provide food for herself and her husband while recovering from childbirth?
The man being the provider only makes sense.
To Love His Wife
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.”
– Ephesians 5:25-28 (emphasis added)
The Bible compares the man to Christ and the woman to the church. Christ gave His life for the church. That’s the ultimate expression of love. A man is to love his wife unto death.
In addition to that, it says a man should love his wife as he loves his own body. In today’s world, people are full of themselves. As much as people love themselves, husbands should love their wives just the same.
To Wash His Household With God’s Word
“…that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word…”
– Ephesians 5:26
This scripture makes it clear that the man is supposed to be the spiritual leader of the household. Does that mean the wife can’t seek God on her own or teach her husband about the Word? Absolutely not! That’s just absurd!
It does mean, however, that the man will be held responsible by God for his influence on his family. The Lord wants the man to lead his family in seeking God’s Word.
To Nourish And Cherish His Wife
“So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.”
– Ephesians 5:28-29
Since husbands are to treat their wives as their own bodies, they are to take wonderful care of them. They are to nourish and cherish them.
They are to protect and keep them safe. When it comes to anyone, always ask, “How would I want to treated?” Then, do your best to treat them excellently.
To Be The Head
“For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.”
– Ephesians 5:23
“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.”
– 1 Corinthians 11:3
The Bible is straightforward about the man being the head of the household. Because the man is the head, the woman is very important. The physical head on a body cannot support itself. It can’t do much without the body.
The physical head of a body receives input from the body in order to make effective decisions. The head gives ongoing instruction and initiates the action of the body.
God is so amazing in the way He created man and woman for each other.
Men & Women Are Equal
The Bible makes it very clear that men and women are equal in the eyes of God; they’re both created in the image of God. Yet, men and women have different roles to play in society and the family. Society needs each of them in order to function correctly.
The goals of men and women should be the same, though. They should live obedient lives to God and glorify Him in all they do.
There are many responsibilities of a husband that the Bible teaches. Five of those include:
- to be a provider
- to love his wife
- to wash his household with God’s Word
- to nourish and cherish his wife
- to be the head
