If you’re concerned that your walk with God is shallow, I’m going to provide you with five ways you can know for sure.

All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.

Do You Only Pray To God When You Need Something Or When Life Is Hard?

Unfortunately, many people ignore God when things are going great. However, a true relationship with God cannot be sustained without regular, intimate time together with God in the Spirit. If you’re not giving Him the time of day unless there’s a crisis, then there’s something wrong and your walk with Him is shallow.

Do You Love God Only For What He Can Do For You?

Everyone loves what God can do, but that shouldn’t be the only reason why you love Him. That’s not true love. Would you stay in a relationship with someone who only cared about you because you did nice things for them? Of course not! You’d want someone who loves you for you. God wants the same thing from His people.

When your walk with God is deep, you’re able to ask God what you can do for Him instead of the other way around.

Do You Love God Only Because Of What He Does?

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.”

– Psalm 107:1

God is amazing and has done great things for His people. Always praise Him for all the great things He has done in your life, but don’t allow those things to be a stumbling block to your relationship with Him.

You should love God because of who He is, not because of what He does. His character is amazing and regardless of how your life is right now, God still loves you. Never forget that!

Do You Get Mad At God When Things Don’t Go Your Way?

But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.”

– Psalm 115:3

It’s understandable to be disappointed when things don’t go your way or when God doesn’t answer your prayers right away. However, seasoned Christians have learned to trust God through all things. They understand that all things happen for a reason even if we don’t see that reason right now.

Therefore, praise God no matter what route He decides to take your life. Believe that He knows the best and trust in Him.

Do You Think You Have To Bribe God To Get Your Prayers Answered?

You don’t have to persuade God to answer your prayers if you’re praying in line with scripture. If God makes you wait a bit for your prayers to be answered in the physical realm, continue to believe He’ll answer and praise Him while you wait.

Conclusion

There are five symptoms of a shallow walk with God. These include:

  1. Praying only when you need something;
  2. Loving God only because of what He can do;
  3. Loving God only because of what He does;
  4. Getting mad when things don’t go your way;
  5. Attempting to bribe God to get your prayers answered.

If you recognize any of these things in your life, then work on that area and build up your relationship with God. I’ve decided a long time ago that if Jesus died for me, then the least I could do is to live for Him.
