How To Spend More Time With God

spend more time with God

Born again believers in Christ love God- there’s no doubt about it. He’s so great and merciful to us. He’s the creator of all things and has always been faithful to us.

However, many Christians struggle to consistently spend time with God on a daily basis. While there are many reasons for that, it’s important to focus on how to spend more time with God. In this post, I’m going to share some simple tactics with you to help liven up your relationship with God and help you two grow more intimately together.

Don’t Separate Your Life From God

In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

– Proverbs 3:6

The Bible tells us to acknowledge God in all our ways and He will show us the way we should go. Unfortunately, there are people who think God belongs in a separate box away from their lives.

For example, there’s a believer I know who had an alcohol addiction before coming to Christ. After she got saved, she wasn’t instantly set free from it although she started taking the necessary steps to be. I remember she was about to start drinking and I kept talking about the Lord.

This was in my honeymoon days with Christ so I didn’t have a filter and shared my love of God with anyone and everyone. While at first she talked about God, she eventually told me that she wanted to drink and didn’t want to talk about God while she drank. She admitted that it made her feel guilty.

I didn’t understand it because I was still trapped in my sinful addictions, but I wasn’t going to allow them to stop me from growing more intimately with Christ. I understood that God had already forgiven me and all I could do was continue to work out the impending sanctification.

But how many people feel the same way as that lady? Feeling as if their sins disqualify them from God and He shouldn’t be acknowledged in those times? God can set us free from all of our sins and ailments, but we have to hand them over to Him and allow Him to work in our lives.

Don’t put God in a box and tell Him to stay out of everything else in your life. Understand that He wants to make everything whole and new again- and let Him.

Acknowledge God In The Morning

Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.

– Psalm 55:17

Having an encounter with God in the morning is extremely important. You don’t have to read the Word or have a full-blown worship service, but you should at least say “Good morning. I love you. I’m thankful for this day. Help me to make the most out of this day.” You can say whatever you want to God, but be sure to acknowledge Him.

He’s always with us and He loves us dearly. How weird would it be if our spouse didn’t say good morning to us or at least acknowledged us when they wake up? When we speak to God, it invites Him to speak back to us. By doing this first thing in the morning, He can weigh in and give you some insight on your day.

Time Management

“I’m too busy! If I had more time I would spend time with God!”

Are you guilty of saying something to this effect? I certainly know from experience there are days that seem to get away from us especially if you’re working, have a family, and a house to run. However, just because life is hard does not mean we can’t overcome it and conquer it.

The reality is everyone has the same amount of time as each other. So how is it that some people get a whole lot more done than others? The key is to grab ahold of the time God has given you and spend it the best you can.

A great way to take charge of your time is to plan your days. You don’t have to chart everything out, but at least make a list of goals you would like to accomplish during the day. Then, prioritize them. Do the important things first so they’ll be sure to get done. One of those important things should be to pray, worship, praise, or read the Word.

Whatever you do, don’t neglect God. The amount of time you spend with God isn’t as important as the quality of the time spent with Him.

Make It A Habit By Doing It Daily

“Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his disciples went with him.”

– Luke 22:39 CEV

When it comes down to it, our lives are made up of individual habits. If we really want to create lasting change in how we spend time with God, we have to make it a habit. That means doing it every day through repetition.

But take heart! You don’t have to spend hours with God every day. (Unless you want to of course!) Instead, set a timer and get started doing something. I’ve learned that people who set very high goals often miss the mark and become discouraged to the point of failure. If it’s all or nothing, people usually end up with nothing. Therefore, don’t feel ashamed about starting with a small amount of time.

Just like with a seed, it will eventually grow into a great tree. It just needs to be watered daily.

Spend Time In The Word Daily

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

– Romans 12:2

The most important thing a believer in Christ could do is build their knowledge of God’s Word. That means meditating on scripture or speaking them out loud.

My favorite method of learning scripture is reviewing them daily until they stick to my memory. Of course, there are few I know vertabim and even fewer that I know the exact book, chapter, and verse. It’s definitely not my strong suit. However, what matters is the fact that I know the scriptures.

I know what it says, what it means, and how to apply it. I’ve allowed the truth of God to sink into my Spirit and transform me. That means I know how utterly vital it is to study the Word of God.

If you struggle in this area, I suggest putting scriptures where you can see them. Some examples include:

  • on the fridge
  • on a mirror
  • in your purse/wallet
  • on the cabinets
  • on your dresser
  • anywhere that you can see daily

This strategy has been used by many people who wanted to learn the Word of God. I used it when I first got saved. A pastor’s wife I know said she used to carry scriptures in her pocket and read them throughout the day. It’s highly effective.

Conclusion

All in all, there are plenty of ways to spend more time with God. Some of these ways include:

  • Allowing God access into every area of your life
  • Acknowledging God when you wake up
  • Managing your time more efficiently
  • Doing it daily until it forms a habit
  • Meditating on and studying the Word daily
