The Bible tells God’s people that there’s a spiritual war going on that is invisible to the naked eye. However, it’s a very real battle and one that no one should ignore. The Bible says to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). It also shares spiritual weapons we can use to overcome the enemy and his tactics.
All scriptures are taken from the NKJV unless otherwise noted.
The Word of God
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints…”
– Ephesians 6:17-18
The Word of God is probably the most important weapon we have to fight evil with. Without it, we would have no idea who God is and what He expects from us. Ephesians chapter six tells us that the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It’s an offensive weapon that hurts our opponents and causes them to flee.
Jesus used the Word of God when He was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. In fact, He spoke the Word of God three times in response to the devil.
“But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
– Matthew 4:4
The enemy knows God’s Word. Therefore it’s not enough to just have a closed Bible sitting on the shelf. The real power lies in the believer in Christ speaking the Word of God with clarity and understanding. Satan leads many astray by twisting the Word of God. Never underestimate how important it is to read the Word and understand it for yourself.
“Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
– 1 Peter 5:8
The Bible tells us that this fight we’re in is not in the physical realm. Therefore, how could you know if the enemy has laid a trap ahead of you to cause you harm? You won’t unless you’re walking by faith. You must have strong muscles of discernment, truth, and wisdom.
Many believers find themselves under Satan’s thumb because they don’t have the faith to see and hear in the spiritual realm. If you’re ignorant of these things, the enemy will easily wipe you out.
Praise & Worship
“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
– Nehemiah 8:10
The enemy hates when people worship anything other than him and what he allows them to. When we decide to worship and praise God, the Holy Spirit within us grows and God dwells with us. The enemy will not stick around if God’s there. This is how you overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
Praising God also protects us from attacks and causes other demons to flee. For example, there is a spirit of depression. In Isaiah, the Bible tells us that praise conquers this spirit.
“The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…”
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
– 1 Peter 5:8
Disobedience to God’s Word can invite the enemy into our life. If there are any legal openings to attack you, he will definitely take advantage of them. Peter warns us to be alert and to pay close attention to our surroundings because the enemy is waiting to pounce.
You may not be perfect, but be sure to keep yourself covered will confession and sincere repentance.
