While there are many tactics of Satan, I’m going to cover the four most common ones in this post. When you know how the enemy operates, then you know how to properly fight back against him.

Deceives
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
– John 8:44
Anything that’s a lie has a demonic origin. All lies come from Satan. The Bible says the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (John 14:17; John 15:26; John 16:13; 1 John 4:6; 1 John 5:6). In John chapter 17, Jesus prays an incredible prayer in which He prays for Himself, His disciples, and all believers. During that prayer, He says the Word of God is truth (John 17:17). A little bit before that, Jesus proclaims that He is the truth (John 14:6).
In other words, there can be no lie found in God or His Word. “God is not a man, that He should lie…” (Numbers 23:19). Therefore, if you come across a lie, rebuke and correct it. Lies lose their power when confronted with the truth. Sure, there may be people who want to believe the lie over the truth. However, I believe followers of Christ have an obligation to combat lies with the truth.
The only way Satan can reign on this planet is by spreading lies and deceiving people. The truth sets people free which is why the enemy tries his hardest to ensure people never hear the true gospel of Jesus Christ.
Tempts
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.”
– James 1:13
Without temptation, the enemy would have never been able to influence Eve to disobey God. Satan tempts people with urges, lusts, and ungodly desires to do what is wrong before the sight of God. He very carefully presents sin as good and desirable, but never shares the true story. “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). Unless someone becomes born again through the blood of Jesus, there will be nothing to pay for the wages of sin and they will die in their sin.
Instead of listening to the lies of Satan, dig deep into the truth found in God’s Word and you’ll always be able to make the right decision in the hour of temptation.
Hinders
“Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us.”
– 1 Thessalonians 2:18
If the enemy cannot withhold the truth of the gospel from someone, the next best thing he can do is distract and hinder someone from being effective for the Kingdom of God. There’s only so much time before Jesus comes back and once time passes, you can’t get it back. I’ve noticed that in modern society, there are so many distractions!
People can spend countless hours in front of the television or their cell phone. This is concerning for the church because precious time can be wasted if we’re not careful. I treat the TV and the phone as entertainment. Sure, it’s okay to be entertained, but entertainment without a good balance of work spells disaster.
“Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.”
– 1 Corinthians 15:34
Accuses
“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.”.
– Revelation 12:10
While there are many physical signs of demonic operations, the war takes place in the invisible realm of the spirit. The most common place Satan attacks people is in their thoughts. Demonic forces invade the thoughts of people and plant evil thoughts. If the person believes these demonic thoughts to be true, then a stronghold can successfully be planted. God gives His people the power to destroy these demonic strongholds by renewing their minds with the Word of God.

If someone doesn’t know the truth found in God’s Word, they can easily be led astray to believe anything about themselves. When I was growing up, I believed no one loved me and that I was worthless. As soon as I got saved by believing in Jesus Christ, those deadly and demonic thoughts were destroyed. I knew that God loved me and I was worth tremendous value to Him. But if I didn’t find Christ, those thought patterns could’ve led me to suicide. That’s exactly how powerful evil thoughts are and Satan knows that and uses it to his advantage.
Conclusion
There are so many ways Satan attacks people. Just four tactics of Satan are:
- Deceive
- Tempt
- Hinder
- Accuse
Anytime someone tries to deceive you, tempt you, hinder or distract you from your true purpose, or accuse you wrongfully, then you know there’s a demonic spirit behind that attack. Always be on the lookout and cover yourself with prayer.
