In the Bible, we find a commandment from God to those who believe in Him. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
God tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. When we become born again, we now have to learn to think the way God would prefer us to. So how do we do that? Well, in this post I’m going to share with you some tried and true tips to transform your mind for Christ.
Meditate On And Study The Word Regularly
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
– Hebrews 4:12
According to the above scripture, the word of God is alive and full of power. It’s sharper than a sword and can divide the soul from the spirit. In other words, the Bible can transform our lives by separating our personal desires from that of God’s.
Before we were saved, we could only view life from our point of view. However, when we get saved we receive the Holy Spirit. By watering the Holy Spirit within us with the Word of God, it’ll continue to grow within us until we fully walk in the Spirit.
If you don’t know the truth found in God’s word, then you won’t stand a chance against the enemy. The enemy is the father of lies and operates in deceit. Multiple times in the scripture, Jesus tells His disciples to not be deceived. To know the truth of God, we must spend time in His word.
Reading the word is important, but studying and meditating on it is more important. Don’t just read it, but ponder on it. Think about it all day long and ask God to give you revelations about it. You’ll be surprised at what He reveals to you if you ask Him to.
Get Around Other Christians
Another critical thing you can do for your walk with God is to get around other Christians. A lot of wisdom we acquire comes from personal experiences. When you get a bunch of people in the room, you have a chance to learn from the experiences of others.
Different people can read the same passage in the Bible and get different lessons or conclusions. By discussing the Bible with others, you can discover more about what the Word says.
In addition to those things, there’s incredible value in having Christian friends. Whenever you find yourself in trying circumstances, you want to have someone you can call to give you sound, biblical advice.
In my own life, I’m so grateful to have people who have mentored me and shared their wisdom with me. I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time by hanging out with people who are older than me and have been walking with God for a long time. Long-term Christians can say some of the most amazing things that would make your mind explode with excitement.
I can’t stress enough to you the benefits of having a solid Chrisitan community you can gather with.
Purge And Evaluate Your Influential Streams
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
– Proverbs 23:7
When I first got saved, I thought I would never be able to listen to rap music again. My eyes and ears were open and the sin in the music industry was so repulsive. I couldn’t enjoy that music anymore. I was okay with giving up music, but I didn’t have to. I found out there are many Christian artists out there I can enjoy, including rappers!
If you’re going to transform your mind for Christ, then you have to carefully evaluate the things you’re allowing in your mind. Jim Rohn calls the mind, “A mental factory.” According to him, whatever we put into our minds end up flowing out into our actions, habits, and perspectives.
Therefore, it’s not enough to just put the Word of God in our minds. We must also get rid of the negative streams impacting our minds.
Take a good look at your TV shows, movies, and social media feeds. Then, ask yourself these questions:
- Does this glorify God?
- Does it benefit the Kingdom of God?
- Is it truthful?
- Is it sinful?
- Does it unify the body of Christ?
- Does it line up with the teachings found in the Bible?
By asking these questions, you can evaluate the things you’re putting in your mind. You want to make sure anything you’re viewing or looking at does not conflict with the Holy Spirit within you if you want to transform your mind for Christ.
Read Christians Books Other Than The Bible
The Bible is important for our growth with God, but so are other Christian books. The reason I say that is because books give us the chance to learn from others. There are many great books out there that teach the Bible and help us to understand it deeper.
Also, there are books that help us achieve our goals in a godly way. For example, Dave Ramsey is a financial teacher that bases all his teaching from the Bible. He claims that everything he knows about finances comes from biblical principles and that’s why they work.
There are books about marriage, goals, finances, confidence, loving your neighbor, and every topic you can think about. Therefore, if you’re struggling in a certain area and want to hear what the Bible says about it, a book from a trusted source is a great way to learn.
Listen To More Sermons
I’m sure you’ve heard the importance of going to church. A church is necessary to have a community of believers and a safe place to worship and pray. However, if you want to transform your mind for Christ then you’re going to need to listen to more teachings about the Word of God.
After getting saved, all my TV intake consisted of sermons. There are so many amazing, older pastors out there that are seasoned with wisdom. You can learn a whole lot in a short amount of time by dedicating time to watching more sermons. Plus, technology makes it easy for us.
You can play sermons in your car, on your phone connected to a speaker, or on YouTube on the television. The ways are endless. Play them while you’re cleaning, taking a shower, or doing some exercise.
Practice Casting Down Demonic Thoughts
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.“
– 2 Corinthians 10:4-6
The enemy tries to make us believe his lies by convincing us that they’re our own thoughts. He’ll shoot a lie directly to our minds in the form of a thought. For example, the thought “I’m worthless” is a lie straight from Satan and if we believe it, then he’s won.
You must be able to identify when the enemy is lying to you and defeat him by casting these thoughts away. I’ve written a whole post about using that strategy to defeat Satan. If you want to read up on that, click the link below.
The tips I mentioned above to transform your mind for Christ have been tried and tested. These things work. In fact, try them for thirty days and tell me how you feel. You will have grown in wisdom, knowledge, and in the Spirit. Try these things for a year and you’d be surprised at how your life has changed.
God gives us all we need in His Word and when we apply these things to our lives, we become successful and living proof that it works. Let’s recap. To transform your mind for Christ:
- Meditate on and study the Word regularly
- Get around other Christians
- Purge and evaluate your influential streams
- Read Christian books other than the Bible
- Listen to more sermons
- Practice casting down demonic thoughts
