4 Different Ways God Speaks To His People

ways god speaks

Does God still speak to His people in today’s age? In short, yes. Believe it or not, there are people who have never heard God’s voice and have no idea when He speaks to them.

I remember there was one day I was casually talking about the Lord and shared something that He told me. The person I was speaking to looked at me funny and said, “You hear God speak?” It caught me off guard because I thought hearing God’s voice was completely normal.

If you want to hear more from God, this post is going to go over a few simple ways you can practice that. Once you make a habit of speaking to God and hearing from Him, you won’t even have to think about it. It will happen naturally.

God Speaks Through His Word

“Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.”

– Ronald Reagan

There are countless reasons to read the Word of God. When you want to hear from God, reading the Bible is a wonderful way to do so. It’s how we learn more about the character of God and His desires.

By doing this, God can call scriptures into memory during moments of difficulty. He can remind us how people in the Old Testament handled certain situations and He can speak hope directly into our hearts.

If you don’t know many scriptures, that’s okay. Begin reading the Word of God and you will soon learn a great deal about who He is and you may find the answers you’re looking for in there.

I would suggest praying before reading, also. If you’re looking for a specific answer, pray about it. Ask God to show you the answer in His Word and don’t stop reading until you find it.

God Speaks Through Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

– James 1:5

Wisdom and common sense come from the Lord. That’s why you will find many intellectuals that lack common sense- because they don’t have God. This is why many scientists play stupid games with creation and reasoning. For example, the idea that pedophiles have to be sympathized with is now being pushed through the media.

Why and how is that? Well, they don’t have a moral compass or the fear of God that tells them otherwise. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 9:10 that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom.

God blesses His people with spiritual revelations that the world lacks. He uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27). Whenever God reveals or shows things to you, take it seriously. Wisdom is a blessing and can guide you through the toughest of situations.

God Speaks By Giving Peace

One thing we can be certain of is peace from God when we are living in His Will. I remember when I first got saved, sin bothered me so bad but I was still addicted to a few bad habits. Every single time I would commit these actions, I would feel conviction. I hated the feeling and it eventually helped me to quit the sinful habits I had brought into my relationship with God.

Have you ever kept a secret from someone and was bothered by it? You knew you should tell them, but didn’t know how to do so? It ate you up inside until you couldn’t take it any longer. That’s a sign that you’re doing something wrong.

When you’re doing what God wants you to do, you will be at peace. Your conscious will not be bothered and you will be happy with your decisions. If you’re making a big decision and something doesn’t feel right, take a step back and pray. Ask God to guide you in the right direction.

Remember, Proverbs 3:5 tells us that if we acknowledge God in all our ways, He will direct our path. This is a promise straight from the Word of God.

God Speaks To People Using A Small, Internal Voice

The fourth way that God faithfully speaks to His people is through a small, still, internal voice. It will be a calm voice that presents itself as a sort of knowing.

I’ve heard God’s voice many times since I’ve been saved. It’s something that one cannot doubt when they hear it. It can throw someone off guard and stop someone right in their tracks.

A good exercise you can try to hear this small voice is to pray. While praying, present your case to God and ask Him to speak to you. Tell Him you will wait as long as needed and will remain silent. Then, sit quietly and wait for God to speak.

There have been times when God didn’t speak, but there are many more times that He has responded to that request. If God wants to speak to you and you’re telling Him that you’re ready to receive it, don’t you think that will make Him act?

3 Tips For Talking To God

I realize that there are people who fail to hear from God, but there are also people who don’t speak to God. Maybe they feel weird about it or make it out to be something to difficult. God is not surprised by anything that comes out of our mouth or mind. He knows it all.

Yet, putting it into words for God is a skill we must learn by practice. Begin today! Start talking to God about everything and anything. Use these techniques if you need to.

Before you end your day by going to sleep, take time, and reflect on what happened during your day. By doing this, you can become aware of any moment God may have guided you or spoke to you during the day. This will help you become better at recognizing it the moment it occurs. Also, I use this time to pray for my loved ones and thank God for His goodness. We’re not guaranteed another day, but I will express my gratitude for each day at the end of it.

Whenever you talk to God, speak to Him like you would a friend. God is our friend and doesn’t want to be treated as a weird alien. He knows everything about us and He loves us greatly. Our relationship with God shouldn’t be awkward. While it may take some practice, open up to God as you would to your best friend. Be yourself and completely honest. If you’re feeling like something is in the way, repent. I always start my prayers off with repentance because I’m so grateful for His forgiveness and want to express my commitment to Him. I may not be perfect, but nothing will get in my way of speaking with God. Lay everything on the table and become completely transparent.

When you drink your morning coffee, tea, or water, spend that time talking with God. Starting your day off with God is extremely important. This can be a time for God to guide you and show you critical tasks that need to be done. However, if you don’t take the time to reach out to Him then you may not get that guidance. Many people drink coffee when their day starts. If that’s you, then that’s a perfect time to speak with God. How many of us spend that time mindlessly going over social media updates? Instead, check-in with God and let Him speak with you.

There are many ways God speaks to His people. These ways include:

  • Through His Word
  • Through wisdom
  • By giving peace to His people
  • Using an internal voice

If you learn to maximize on these techniques to hear from God, you will be able to hear from Him in almost every way at all times. Be aware that there are times when God is silent for a season in a reason. Don’t become discouraged! At any given moment, do the very last thing God advised you to. Keep practicing these ways and you’ll be sure to win at communicating with God!
