The ultimate goal for every believer in Christ should be to be obedient to God’s word. As believers, we don’t live for man; we live for God. Of course, one of the most effective ways to be obedient to God is to read the Bible and live by its commandments. Below I’ll name four ways to be obedient to God that you can begin doing today.
Align With God’s Purpose
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
– Romans 12:2
You cannot obey God if you don’t know what His plans are for your life. By reading the word and renewing your mind, you’ll grow in discernment and wisdom. You’ll be able to identify the paths you should take and the ones to avoid.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6
Before making any major decisions, always ask God for input. He knows everything and can protect you from making a horrible mistake. Whenever making plans for the future, ask God for wisdom. The best and safest place to be is in the center of God’s will.
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
– James 1:2-4
Whenever trouble makes its way into your life, accept it with a great attitude. All tests come from God and bad things don’t happen without God’s approval. To patiently endure means to remain under trials and unfavorable circumstances with a good attitude.
Since God determines which tests make their way to us, He’s expecting us to overcome them. He doesn’t send trials and tribulations for no reason. Instead, He’s wanting us to put our trust in Him and continue being obedient to Him.
“Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.”
– James 5:7-10
There are times when we pray and wonder why God is taking so long to move. However, God sits outside of time and space. What seems like a long time to us could seem like a second to God. He sees the whole picture and knows the future.
I’ve been in many instances in my life where it felt like God was taking so long, but all those things have come to pass. God is faithful and will provide for you.
Wait On God
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”
– Hebrews 9:27-28
After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples were expecting Him to come back again during their lifetime. That was a long time ago. If the disciples thought Jesus was coming back that soon, shouldn’t we also have that same attitude. We’re obviously closer to His return than they were. Always keep the end goal in mind: Jesus is coming back. Share the gospel with the lost.
“For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”
– 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10
Remain In A Positive Attitude
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
– 1 John 4:4
It’s so easy to let the troubles of this world engulf and overtake us. Yet, they are not more powerful than the God within us. The Lord is with us everywhere we go. While life can seem overwhelming at times, there’s nothing too difficult that God can’t overcome.
If you want to truly experience happiness in your everyday life, practice being grateful. We all have things we can be grateful for. The problem is many people don’t acknowledge them or the devil convinces them to not be thankful for them.
Try it now: think of 3 things you can be grateful for.
The Bible tells us the joy of the Lord is our strength. Therefore, if the enemy can keep us unhappy we’d be weak and unable to fight back.
There are many things that happen to us in life that we have no control over. The only thing we do have control over is how we behave and how we react to things. No one can take away your mental attitude. Don’t let them.
There are many ways to express obedience to God. I only name four different ways in this post, which include:
- Aligning with God’s purpose
- Patiently enduring
- Waiting on God
- Remaining in a positive attitude
